Welcome to this new forum!
Let’s start with a soft question: What is emetophobia?
From the Latin “emetīcus” which means vomiting.
Phobia of vomiting.
This disorder usually arises in childhood, between the ages of 6 and 11, mainly due to a trauma related to throwing up, not processed correctly.
The disorder manifests itself with a strong repulsion to the act: fear, terror and disgust mixed together, causing a strong state of anxiety and tension.
The behavior of the emetophobic tends to avoid risky situations of various kinds:
– does not consume alcohol, avoiding intoxication
– does not consume raw (sushi, tartare …) and fried
food, avoids cold drinks…
– does not go to crowded places
– immediately walks away from people who said
they had gastrointestinal virus recently
– avoids sharing bottles with others
– avoids dangerous rides
… but there are also advantages!
– wash his/her hands often
– prefers to eat healthy and light food, but does not say no to even “heavier” food if prepared with care
– pays attention to hygiene
– is a very good friend for those who don’t want to
drive, allowing them to drink alcohol
– prefers open and wide spaces
Emetophobia is a very widespread disorder, however the scientific and psychological literature has never treated it adequately, since vomiting is thought to be a legitimate fear.
Who likes to do it?
Actually, in emetophobics, the mechanisms are much more complex and problematic, so much that can cause problems related to the relationship with food, confusing emetophobia with anorexia, a completely different disorder, since the emetophobic does not have a repulsion towards food. Only sometimes heavoids it, as the mantra is: if I don’t eat, I have no stomach content to vomit.
How can I get out of it?
What greater desire for an emetophobic than to get out of this state of anguish and terror? But … how to do it ?!
Well, first of all, generally, we need to make aware the people around us: family, wife/husband, friends… that, knowing your fear, they can move accordingly,
respecting your decisions and your times, not forcing you to do certain things .. etc ..
Then it would be even better to begin a psycho-therapeutic path, working on the traumas that cause you anxiety and terror at the idea of being sick, reworking them and inserting them in the right drawer of our mind.
The icing on the cake would be to know people like YOU, emetophobic, with whom you can confront and support, sharing joys, successes, failures, and feeling less alone.
Commitment, perseverance, determination and motivation: the key ingredients to dominate this phobia, getting the upper hand.
What is the goal of the forum?
This forum was created with the aim of reunite people affected by this phobia, in such a way as to encourage MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING, EXCHANGE, CONFRONTATION and SUPPORT, becoming a promoter of DIALOGUE;
Main goal: to spread the knowledge of this phobia, as widespread as it is unknow. Together we will do it!
We are not psychologists or psychotherapists or psychiatrists, and the forum or this site cannot and does not want to be the solution to overcome emetophobia. We are just people who want to allow everyone to talk about emetophobia.
